Our Reception pupils transformed into a hardworking team of busy beavers for their Woodland School session last week. Their mission: to build their very own leaky dam.
As the children made their way through the woods towards the stream, they gathered up every long branch they could find. Some carried them in pairs and some dragged them all the way – amazing teamwork and determination from our young builders!
Once at the stream, it was time to build their leaky dam. One by one, each child stepped into the stream to weave their branches behind upright posts to hold the dam’s structure in place. Even though the water level was low, it still managed to trickle over the top of a few children’s wellies … all part of the fun of exploring our woods!
Our two Reception classes and their teachers plan to visit the dam regularly to watch how it changes over time. Eventually, they hope the dam will start holding back some silt to slow the water flow to create a small pool.
Mrs Fontes, one of our woodland school teachers, commented: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to hear the sound of trickling water as it flows over the dam? What a lovely place for the children to enjoy creating art, reading a book or just playing with their friends.”
