It is always a pleasure to hear from OTNs, and especially to be reminded of the lasting impressions their time at Terra Nova has made. We were delighted to receive this reflection from Edward Taylor (OTN 1976–1982), who shares a fond memory from his school days and how it continues to inspire him today as he prepares to take on the London Marathon this weekend. His story is a wonderful example of the enduring spirit of Terra Nova, and of the confidence and willingness to embrace new challenges that stays with pupils long after they have left.
It is about 45 years since Andrew Keith, the headmaster of Terra Nova School at the time, ran in the London Marathon. It must have been in either the first or second year it was ever run. He ran to raise funds to build the school’s first hard tennis court. In the years since, about 1.3 million people have run in this event. As I prepare for the privilege of running myself, I reflect on the inspiration I took from the school back then, and value, still, the confidence that was instilled into me to be prepared always to take on new challenges. Since then, only 4-5000 people have had the privilege to pass through Terra Nova school as pupils, and I hope that some will be willing to help me to support the underprivileged who live in remote villages in the Himalayas by improving access to basic healthcare needs.
