Exploring our Tropical Rainforests
This term, Year 2 has been immersed in our “Tropical Rainforests” topic. The children explored the vital importance of trees, delving into high-level scientific concepts like photosynthesis, the water cycle, and the role of forests as “carbon sinks.” However, they also encountered the sobering reality of deforestation, learning that due to extreme temperatures and prolonged droughts, some regions, such as parts of the Amazon Rainforest, now emit more carbon than they actually absorb.
The Pre-Loved Toy Sale
Empowered by the belief that they are never too young to make a difference, the children decided to take action by organising a pre-loved toy sale. This project showcased incredible enterprising skills: the children advertised the event, generously parted with their own unused toys, sorted items into categories, and agreed on fair prices. On the day, they were amazing at selling, calculating totals and change, and carefully adding up the proceeds.
Turning Toys into Trees
Thanks to the hard work of the pupils and the wonderful generosity of our school families, the sale raised a fantastic total of £422. Every penny of this was used for its intended purpose: to purchase the saplings for the next stage of our environmental mission, effectively turning old toys into a new, green future. With the funds secured, the children took their learning outdoors to put their plan into action. Working together as a dedicated team, they planted the trees and saplings in our local area.
Voices for the Planet
To conclude, Year 2 demonstrated how they are using their creativity to advocate for the environment. They made t-shirts and tote bags which they personally decorated with vibrant designs and powerful messaging. From “Save the Earth”, “Save the Planet” and “Save the Rainforest” to their favourite call to action, “Don’t be part of the pollution, be part of the solution”. They showed the whole school that they are ready to lead the way in protecting our world.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who supported the toy sale and helped our Year 2 pupils turn their classroom learning into a greener reality.
