On Thursday this week, five pupils from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Shrewsbury School as finalists in the Sir Phillip Sydney Essay Competition. It was an amazing achievement to have five finalists, with only 30 finalists from a total of 217 entrants.
Our pupils had a wonderful time, taking part in two workshops based on their essay topic on why we should preserve nature and wildlife. The first session saw pupils learning about the importance of ecosystems, devising plans to protect specific ecosystems. The second workshop was a practical session, where the pupils were taught about the importance of bees, and even built their own beehive part.
The prize giving ceremony followed at the end of the day, with Terra Nova pupil Olivia crowned winner for her entry in the Year 5 category, collecting her award from Dr Richard Kowenicki, Director of Education for the Shrewsbury Family of Schools. All pupils were delighted to share in Olivia’s and their own successes together, and were a credit to the school throughout.
Congratulations to Bridget, Artis, Primrose, Olivia and Teddy for their success in such a fantastic and challenging project.
