The past fortnight has been a terrific celebration of Science at Terra Nova, with STEM week celebrated in full force across Science, D&T and Mathematics, culminating in our second annual Science fair. Pupils from Reception – Year 7 were asked to conduct an investigation, to draw conclusions and to present their findings at a glorious afternoon of Science on Monday 16th March.
The choice of theme and project was entirely at the pupils’ discretion, and topics ranged from superfoods, venomous snakes, and lava flows to orthodontics, coral reefs, and the properties of egg shells. The children’s love of and interest in scientific exploration and investigation was brilliant to witness, and the quality of research, without exception, belied the age of the pupils.
Dr Richard Kowenicki, Director of Education for the Shrewsbury Family of Schools, attended as guest of honour and adjudicator, and was effusive in his praise for the children’s work. Dr. Kowenicki commented, “Thank you for inviting me up to judge in the TN Science Fair yesterday. I very much enjoyed chatting with all the pupils about their brilliant projects. There was an impressive level of engagement all round, and it was clear from the energy in the room that pupils and parents had enjoyed working in partnership to prepare. I was thoroughly impressed by absolutely everyone’s contribution. Well done to everyone involved.”
A very sincere “thank you” must also go to Mrs Tomlinson, Head of Science, for her vision and delivery of such a brilliant event – we cannot wait to see what the pupils will think of next!
