Our History
Terra Nova School is a leading preparatory school in the UK and has a history dating back to 1897. Initially a boys’ school founded by Edwin Owen, it later became co-educational and has occupied its current site in Cheshire since 1939. The school is known for its rigorous curriculum, strong academic reputation, and commitment to preparing students for top senior schools.
Founding Years (1897-1939)
Terra Nova School was founded in 1897, initially located in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, and later moved to a purpose-built building in New Birkdale, Lancashire. During this period, it established itself as a preparatory school focused on preparing boys for public schools, with a strong record of success in Common Entrance examinations.
Relocation to Jodrell Hall (1939)
In 1939, the school moved to its current location, Jodrell Hall, in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire.
This move marked a significant expansion, with the school taking over the 32-acre estate.
Post-War Development
After World War II, Terra Nova continued to thrive, solidifying its reputation as a leading prep school.
Co-education and Modern Era
Terra Nova transitioned to co-education, welcoming both boys and girls in the early 1980s.
